Football (Futebol in Portuguese) is an important part of the Brazilian culture, and we wanted to experience it first hand. Florianopolis has 2 teams, which are currently both in the Brazilian second league: Avai and Figueirense. We had the pleasure of going to two matches, one in each team's home stadium: On 17-Aug-2018 Figueirense played vs. Goias, and lost 1:2 and on 01-Sep-2018 there was a city derby, and this time Figueirense beat Avai 0:1. We were starting to think that we brought both teams bad luck!
Both stadiums have a capacity of ~20,000, and are in decent shape.
Both matches had excellent atmospheres, the fans were happy and the party started two hours before the match did. There are many small food and drink stands outside of the stadiums, and the fans are friendly and inviting. Definitely a good way to experience the local culture!
